The Accounts Executive is responsible for day-to-day accounting tasks to support the finance team and wider business. Key duties include processing sales and purchase invoices, matching supplier statements, and ensuring timely payment runs while maintaining accurate records in the accounting system. The role also requires preparing bank reconciliations, monitoring cash flow and supporting payroll administration as necessary.

In addition, the Accounts Executive will prepare regular financial reports and assist with month and year end procedures. They will work closely with other departments to resolve billing queries, escalate discrepancies and help improve processes to increase efficiency. Experience with accounting packages such as Sage, Xero or QuickBooks is desirable, as is knowledge of VAT rules and filing requirements.

Accounts Executive Duties and Responsibilities

  • Process sales and purchase invoices and maintain the purchase ledger and sales ledger.
  • Perform regular bank reconciliations and month-end reconciliations.
  • Prepare and post journal entries and accruals.
  • Support the preparation of management accounts and financial reports.
  • Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable, including credit control activities.
  • Assist with VAT returns and ensure compliance with HMRC requirements.
  • Support payroll processing and related payroll reconciliations where required.
  • Liaise with suppliers and resolve invoice or payment queries promptly.
  • Maintain accurate fixed asset records and depreciation schedules.
  • Assist with internal and external audits by providing requested documentation.
  • Identify process improvements and contribute to the implementation of best practices.

Accounts Executive Requirements and Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a similar accounts role or within practice.
  • AAT qualified or part-qualified by experience in accounting or finance.
  • Proficiency in accounting software such as Sage, Xero or QuickBooks.
  • Strong Excel skills, including use of formulas and pivot tables.
  • Good understanding of VAT, payroll and basic tax obligations.
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong numerical skills.
